“I am nothing special. Just a common man with common thoughts, I’ve led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten. But in one aspect I have succeeded as gloriously as anyone who’s ever lived. I have loved another with all my heart. The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds. That’s what you’ve given me. That’s what I hope to give you forever. I love you.”

A Wolf-Girls Tale
A/N: Sorry I haven't updated, my life has been a little crazy!! Here is the rest of chapter two in Layla's point of view.
Five hours later I sat cross-legged on my hammock-slash-bed, my lace curtain was drawn and I held the note Demetri had given Cassie. I was watching Cassie sleep on her hammock. Zulia had given her a dose of some kind of pain killer that had made her pass out, Kuzon had carried her in. I refolded the paper and placed it under my pillow. I leaned my head against the wall and closed my eyes. Almost immediately I was pulled into one of Cassie’s memories. ¶It was a cloudy full moon night; I lifted myself onto my elbows and found that I was lying in front of Luna’s Mansion! Dead pine needles blanketed her yard and all of the flowers in the flower beds were wilting. The clearing around the house spanned a half mile all the way around. A wrought iron fence surrounded the house and clearing. A cool wind blew the few leaves left off of the trees. It wasn’t a particularly cold night, but I felt a chill in my bones. I stood to my full height and dusted myself off before walking up the steps. When I go into peoples’ minds and watch their memories, I become like a phantom. My physical body appears to be sleeping or daydreaming, but my mind is able to venture out and, if I so wish relive someone else’s past, but if not, I just watch it from the sidelines. Entering Luna’s Mansion was like stepping into Tara from Gone with the Wind. It was huge and old-looking. I jogged up the steps and went down the right hallway, the direction the noise was coming from. At the end of the hallway where two thick solid oak doors with fancy gold handles; the entrance to The Queen’s chamber. “You idiot!” Luna’s voice rang through the doors. Then there was the sound of metal hitting the floor and glass breaking. I stepped through the wooden door. A red faced, hands clenched, panting Luna stood in front of a hunched down, fearful Cassie. She looked like she was about nine or eight years of age, her hair was shorter but still silky and flipped out at the bottom. In front of her was a metal food tray with spilt food and shattered dishes covering it. “Get out! Get out of my sight while it’s good for you!” Luna snarled. Cassie stood and bowed to Luna before running out of the room like it would burst into flames at any moment. I followed her out, past the stairway, down the left hallway and into a room half way down. She closed the door and sank down against it; she pulled her knees up against her chest and wrapped her arms around them. She placed rested her head on her arms and began to cry. I looked around the room. There wasn’t much to be seen, a small pallet of covers with a thin blanket, one pillow was in one corner with a night stand and a lamp next to it. The wall across from the pallet-bed had an open, empty closet and a tiny bathroom. That was it. “Caie?” A little girl’s voice asked. I looked up from Cassie and found a four or maybe five year old standing in front of the night stand. She had long dark brown hair, tanned skin, and big brown eyes. She was wearing a faded cotton gown and clutching a stuffed monkey to her chest. “Isabella? I didn’t hear you get up.” Cassie lifted her head and dried her eyes. “Honey, what’s wrong?” “You not leave me, wite?” Isabella asked; tears breaking the surface. Cassie extended her arm to the little girl; she walked over and curled against Cassie like a daughter would do to her mother. Cassie wrapped her arm around the girl’s shoulders. “I wov you, Caie.” The little girl mumbled. “I love you this much.” Cassie pressed her thumb to her index finger in front of Isabella’s eyes. “That not vey much.” She said quietly. “Yes it is. Because my love starts here and ends right here.” She touched the index finger of her free hand to her pinched thumb, made a big arch in the air and ended on the pinched index finger. The little girl-Isabella-smiled and hugged Cassie’s waist. “I love you that much too.” She whispered. Then everything began to turn to grey fog as I saw Demetri walk out the small bathroom door. ¶ My eyes fluttered open and I found Cassie lying on her hammock, but her eyes were open. A single silent tear ran over the bridge of her nose and fell to the floor. I wanted to go over and comfort her, but I was overly fatigued. That was the major drawback from not having enough practice. I felt like I hadn’t slept in two weeks. (Believe me, I know the feeling.) “Butterflies always fly away.” She mumbled her voice thick with unshed tears.

A Wolf-Girls Tale
A/N: Okay this is the beginning of chapter two. It is shorter than chapter one and is in Layla's POV (point of view). I hope you like it!
Nicola had already left for the entrance and Yue was hyperventilating. Being around these two made me look remotely normal; if I didn’t love being around them so much I would get a restraining order. I hated it when people made me look normal; it was just another success to the government. I was Lathia Whiltheart, professional rebel to anyone who wore a uniform and hat…or at least that’s what Scearceanna called me. Technically, she and her sister, Zulia, were thirteen. Technically. I patted Yue on the back, we were in the middle of the food parlor and she was gaining attention of the zillions of pedestrians’ that were present. “She’s a vegetarian.” I explained to a family of four that had stopped to stare at us. “Can’t stand the site of meat.” I was lying through my teeth. Though she didn’t look it, Yue was the biggest carnivore I’d ever met. “What are we going to do?” Yue asked quietly. “We’re going to do what they said.” She looked at me and I saw the redness and dampness in her eyes. She had been crying silently right next to me, and I hadn’t even known. “Kuzon and Cassie were lucky, what if Nila is attacked and not so lucky? What happens then?” Nila was Yue’s older sister and the only birth family she had left. Nila was our runner; she would take our progress reports on our search to the King and bring back news of our homeland. She was gone for weeks, maybe months at a time; and without her none of us would have met Yue. If Nila died, Yue would be kicked out. In Healio and Marash’s eyes Yue was worthless and served no purpose to us. They were horribly mistaken. Who was the one who makes all of our clothes? Who was the one who talked me out of out of killing Connie? Who was the one who explains Scearceanna’s lechers after I endure the hours of it? Who was the one who listens to me no matter what? Who was the one who is there to be a shoulder to cry on? And most important; who was the one who keeps us all from killing each other? If we lose Yue, we lose everything. “That’s not going to happen.” I assured her. “What if she is already dead?” Her voice cracked on the last word. I pulled Yue into a hug; I felt the jump of her shoulders as she cried more silent sobs, her tears dampening the collar of my shirt. Yue was the little sister I never got to have and if the time did come I would take Yue’s unjust punishment. And if that didn’t work, I’d find a way to get exiled right along with her. “Shh, it’s okay. You’re okay.” I whispered to her. She pulled away and rubbed her eyes. “Let’s go.” She sniffled. “Get this over with quickly.” We both stood and looked around, the crowd had thinned and only a few thousand remained in the food parlor. “Where are we supposed to wait again?” I asked as I picked up my shopping bags and purse. “You never listen, do you?” Yue smiled. “Earthbound.” We had a clear view of the entrance from the door way of Earthbound. Nicola was waiting outside, out of my vision line. I shifted my weight nervously from right to left and back again; chewing my bottom lip and having a starring contest with the glass windows of the store we were standing in front of. I jumped when Yue put a hand on my shoulder; I turned to her and she pointed at the entrance. Nicola walked through the glass door followed by Kuzon. Cassie was falling behind; she was watching something on the roof and had stopped in her tracks. Kuzon grabbed her wrist and pulled her toward the entrance; it wasn’t until they were over the threshold that Cassie took her attention away from the roof. When they reached us Kuzon wrapped his free hand around my shoulders in a hug. When he let go I sidestepped to Cassie and wrapped my arms around her. She was standing straight and her arms were stiff at her sides. I guessed Luna didn’t show very much affection at her home. Cassie was about a half an inch shorter than me and a lot more boney. Like a half-starved little scarecrow with smooth hair. I pulled away and Yue hugged her; she got the same treatment I did. I turned to Kuzon. “How did you get here so fast?” The phone call was only six minutes and twenty-seven seconds ago. “The Ferrari.” He held up the spare key I had given him. Painted black, of course. “So what happened?” I asked. “Hunters.” He said it the same time Cassie said: “Leather.” I turned to her. Yue had stepped back and at some point Kuzon had released her and she was rubbing her wrist. “They were wearing leather?” “Just one. And they walked with more pressure on the right leg.” Cassie confirmed. I nodded; I would have to tell Anna and/or Yugi. “Layla.” Nicola held my forearm tightly. I followed her gaze and found the Twins leaning against the wall of anther store. Forever 21. Nauru and Shita looked the same as they always had. Pale blonde hair, dark honey-shaded skin, the cat eyes, the collars around their necks. Shita was dressed in dark gold skinny jeans, a dark undershirt and dark eye make-up. A dark gold band was tied around her neck, covering up the branding mark she had. She was wearing flip-flops and her arms were crossed over her chest. Nauru was wearing a white short-sleeve shirt, faded blue jeans and black steel-toed boots. A black band with steel stars was tight around his neck. Unlike Shita, he was looking right at me. His light milky-brown eyes framed the black slits that were his pupils; they both had the eyes of a cat. *Find Luna’s daughter, she wants you killed.* Nauru’s voice was like a whispering breeze in my mind. And then the shock set in. Nauru and Shita’s father was a Paleface. My telepathic abilities didn’t work on Palefaces. My father never found a way to do it either. So how was it possible that he spoke to me like that? We were natural born enemies. Nothing would change that. Ever. *Her name is Connita. Destroy her; end her before she kills your last hope.* His eyes went past me before he turned and left, Shita close behind. I looked down. “Connita.” I whispered to myself, the name rang in my head. I looked at Kuzon and Nicola, both of them watching the Twins’ shrinking bodies in the masses of people. I turned toward Yue and…where was Cassie? After looking in the directions the mall went, I turned and saw her in the store, Yue had called it Earthbound. She was kneeling in front of a large wooden mask that was meant to hang on the wall, but it was leaning on a rack in the center of the store. Cassie’s left arm was resting on her left knee; her hair was keeping her face out of my view. I stepped over the threshold, the door chimed as I entered. “I’ll be right with you!” A woman’s voice called from a closed door behind the counter. I walked toward Cassie as Kuzon, Yue, and Nicola filed in. “Luna donated everything to this store.” Cassie said once I was in earshot. Cassie always spoke so quietly. “Really?” She answered me with a quick nod of her head. “There’s a story behind everything in here.” “What’s the story of the mask?” She looked up at me, seemingly surprised I asked the question; the outer edge of her right eyebrow twitched slightly. Something she did when she considered something, in this she was most likely considering whether or not to tell me. After considering for a few counts she stood and I realized that the mask came halfway up her torso. She turned it slightly so the back of the mask faced me. A gold colored rope was stapled at both ends to hold it to a wall. In the center of the back, the words Cassandra E. V. Nightingale – 2nd grade were carved. “You made this?” I reached out to touch the wood, it felt solid. I wasn’t imagining things. “And most of the stuff in this place.” She folded her arms across her chest and looked around. There was a longing in her blue eyes on top of the seemingly constant sadness. I turned to my three amigos standing guard at the door, I lifted my left eyebrow and they acted. Yue closed the door to the store and hung the Store Closed sign on the knob. Kuzon locked the storekeeper in the closet she was in and twisted an iron bar through the handle. Nicola walked to the counter and began removing bags. As Nicola opened the bags Kuzon and Yue began collecting all the merchandise from the shelves and displays and bringing them back to Nicola. I loved how they did anything without having to get an explication. I reached into one of the shopping bags and removed a sock hat I bought. It was white with a red rose sewed into it. It was a Christmas present for Connie; yuck, I hated spending my cash on her. I bit the top of it between my teeth and began pulling Cassie’s hair up. She pulled away quickly but I had already seen them. The rope burns along both sides of her jaw-line and the scars that trailed over her left ear. There were four lines that had sliced through her ear but were now healed over. She was watching me with fear and nothing else, not even a plea to keep it a secret…what did Luna do to her? I took one step in her direction and pulled the hat over her hair, her silky smooth hair. “Who did it?” I referred the marks on her ear. “I did it.” She was almost inaudible. There was a different sound to her voice, like a little girl with stage fright who is trying to remember her lines. It was rehearsed, a lie she had been forced to tell a lot of people for a lot of things. That was when I realized it. She didn’t want to lie to us constantly but that was all she knew, what she was raised to do. “Hey.” Kuzon walked up to us and put his arm around Cassie’s shoulders. She tried to pull away but he kept her there. “How are you holding up?” He asked her. She was looking anywhere but directly at him, she focused on the bottom corner of a rack after looking around for a few seconds. I also noticed how her breathing quickened when Kuzon touched her. I had been joking with her before about her having a crush on him but did she actually? Or did he intimidate her, or remind her of the incredibly evil but amazingly cute drone son of Luna? “Cassie?” I asked. She blinked and looked at me, her eyes were reddening and starting to water; she lifted her eyebrows in a silent what? “Do you want to go home?” she looked back to the corner but nodded her head slightly. I scooped up my bags and walked on her other side out the door and out of the mall to join Yue and Nicola in the parking lot. Did I mention how much I love those two? All of the bags with the stuff from the store were in the trunk, the fold over roof for my car was closed and the windows were up. Pop and Tinker were leaning on the driver’s side back seat window. Both of them had their arms crossed, staring at nothing in particular. A light sprinkle of sky-water was beginning to fall as we all climbed into the car. Nicola beside me in the front seat; Kuzon behind her, Yue behind me and Cassie squeezed between them. She didn’t seem to mind, her hands were on her lap and she was watching them, she had perfect posture. As I turned the keys in the ignition I thought about Cassie. Her perfect posture, her silky black hair, the way she did her eyebrow when she was thinking, the odd shade of eyes she had. They were like baby blue, but a shade or two lighter. As I pulled out of the parking lot of the mall I looked in the rearview mirror above me and saw Cassie. Her eyes were closed and her head was resting on Kuzon’s shoulder, her breathing was steady. How is it all this time I didn’t realize she was that tired? I looked back to the road, it was nearly deserted right now, a car here and there. The sky water was coming down heavier now; I clicked on the windshield wipers and pressed the gas pedal harder. The round needle thingy spiked to 98 MPH. A little slow but I would speed up when I hit the dirt road to the Block. Thirty-six minutes’ and seventeen seconds later I pulled into our garage and killed the engine. We all sat in silence for five minuets’; Cassie was now awake, but she hadn’t moved. I looked at her through the rearview mirror. She still looked exhausted, her eyes were half closed and she blinked slowly. She looked- if possible- even more weak and small than she had before we left the mall. She probably didn’t have the strength to lift her head, let alone walk to the sleep house. Where Zulia was probably sitting in the main room- fuming; though I hated to think it, Zulia had been right. Cassie hadn’t been ready to leave the territory yet. But she had needed to get out! To be around people who were relatively descant. And if Zulia had a problem with it, she could just. Suck. It. Up.
A/N: There you go! Tell me what you think, please! Peace!!

Suck. It. Up.

A Wolf-Girls Tale
A/N: This is the rest of chapter one--Finaly!! Tell me what you think!
We had walked in silence for about three blocks; I had stopped watching Kuzon near the first road we had crossed. I had, instead, been concentrating on the coat. It felt like wool and the design of it reminded me of what I had imagined the British coats looked like in the American Revolution. But this one was black, not red. It fit me surprisingly well. “So what’s your story?” Kuzon asked me. “What do you mean?” I asked. “What was your life like before? What’s your story?” he rephrased. I felt myself smile, but I wasn’t entirely sure why. “A story like mine has never been told.” I said. “Tell me.” He whispered it so softly it sounded like wind. “It’s a long story.” I warned. “We have all day.” He reminded me. We had reached the park, sidewalks laid in circular patterns around sections of dying grass; Parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles were taking little kids here to play; most likely trying to get it in before the storm hit. Kuzon and I sat on a stone bench on the edge of one of the walkways. I took a deep breath; I had never told anyone anything about my life for two reasons, (a) no one ever seemed interested and (b) I couldn’t remember most of it. But if I was going to tell him, I might as well tell him everything I could. “I was dismissed from the hospital three hours after I was born. Two days later, I was found in a trashcan outside of a bar. The person who found me took me to the hospital to see if something major was wrong with me. Miraculously, they didn’t find anything wrong with me. And through some legal something, I was adopted not long after by the nurse that helped deliver me. About a year later she died.” I stopped and looked at Kuzon. His elbows were resting on his knees and his hands were in fists, he was watching me. “How did she die?” He asked slowly. I looked away from him and to the ground. “Murdered. In her sleep, I like to think she didn’t feel anything.” I answered. “I’m sorry.” He apologized. “It’s not your fault. They caught the one who did it, but sometimes I can feel him watching me. I know he wants to kill me, but he never does.” I was whispering and I found myself pulling the pocket knife from my pocket. “I keep this with me in case he ever tries anything.” I slid it back into my pocket. “What happened next?” Kuzon asked. This was when it started to get blurry. “Well, I was in an orphanage for a few months before a man named Mishloto came. I was with him for about three years before he sort of sold me to Luna. And that’s how I met Demetri and had the first motherly figure I really remembered; she wasn’t much of one, though and I ran away on two separate occasions.” I paused. “You know what happened this last one.” “And the first…?” “I need to say something else first.” I looked directly at him. “You can say I’m paranoid or just plain crazy, I don’t care, but I know what I saw that night was real.” I paused before continuing. “I don’t know what you could call her, but she wasn’t human. She looked human, but not exactly; she had sickly pale skin, white blonde hair down past her waist. Her eyes had a hint of light blue, but they were nearly white. She was wearing a grey dress and she appeared out of nowhere. She grabbed my neck, not like she was trying to choke me, but like she wanted my full attention. Her hand was wet, but super hot and she said in a cold little voice that she would kill anyone I loved slowly and painfully; that if I cared for them at all, I would do it before she could and save them the suffering. And then she was gone, it was like she turned to smoke and dissolved.” “White Demon. Did you tell anyone else about this? Like Luna?” He asked. I shook my head and looked up at him. His face was twisted in concern and shock, or at least that’s what it looked like to me. “Did she ever do it?” He asked finally. “I was getting to that.” I took a breath and blew it out slowly. “I was eleven and I was tired of Luna’s ‘parenting methods’ so I took off. I was staying with a friend from school, Violet was her name. I had been with them for a few days and one day I, she, and her parents were driving on a road approaching a river. Her dad was driving, but the car just…it started to spin out of control. I was thrown out of the car and I hit my back o the railing on the side of the road. The car went over the side and into the river; they all drowned.” I sucked in a shaky breath. “She was standing in the middle of the road a few feet ahead of me, looking at the place where the railing had broken. She looked at me, her mouth didn’t move but I heard her say ‘I warned you.’ Then she disappeared the same way she had before and Luna parked her car on the other side of the road. She stuffed me in the back seat and then drove off. That’s my story.” “And now you’re afraid that will happen to us?” He asked. “I’m afraid your deaths will be my fault as well.” I said. “Her death wasn’t your fault, you didn’t know-“ “I should have known.” I looked at him, looked away, and stood. I turned to my left and began walking in the direction we would have gone if we hadn’t stopped. “Wait.” Kuzon said. I didn’t look back at him and I didn’t stop; he ran after me. “Stop.” He wrapped his left hand around my right arm. I stopped and turned to him, he released my arm and I folded them across my chest. “Why did you want to know all that?” I demanded. He hesitated slightly before answering. “Why not?” “Why not? Why do you ask?” “Why do you keep running away?” My eyes widened, I was in the spotlight, and I didn’t like it. “What do I keep running away from?” “You tell me.” I stared at him, unable to do anything else. I had no idea what he was talking about; I wasn’t running away from anything or anyone…was I? I didn’t want to think about this, it hurt my head too much. I continued in the direction I was headed; Kuzon didn’t stop me, but I heard the tap of him shoes on the pavement; he was two, maybe three steps behind me. I knew I was probably overreacting, but I had been betrayed before, and I didn’t want it to happen again. Why had he wanted to know all of those things about me? What was the point? I was going to leave soon, I was going to disappear. The money Layla had given me I was going to use to get a bus ticket or plane; go somewhere where no one knew me. Start a new life away from the memories of this place; maybe I would leave the country. Change my name to something more exotic, like Jasmine or something. Maybe move to Italy and meet my Romeo. Who knows? I was so focused on my insane plans to listen to anything, so I had just enough time to lean back and bump into Kuzon when the dart passed in front of me. It passed harmlessly in front of my face, but hit the ground so hard that it could have shattered my scull. Kuzon was looking in the direction it had come from, but trees blocked the vision line. His arms were wrapped under mine, holding me up. “Make no sudden movements.” He whispered. His mouth was next to my ear and I felt his breath on my cheek. I did as he said and remained still; my heart was racing. In the next instant, Kuzon had moved me between himself and the trees, like I was a human shield to him. I turned my head toward him and saw the flash before I felt the heat; the dart that had hit the ground exploded. A half second later Kuzon was pushing me forward, his right arm around my waist. He began pulling me when I didn’t move. Another dart hit the walk where I had been standing, dust and chunks’ of concrete floated into the air. Kuzon had carried me about three meters on the walk before I came out of my daze; but once I had my feet began pounding the white-grey stone of the walk. Another dart hit the spout of a water fountain and ripped it away from the sandstone base; water rose from it like a geyser. Kuzon unwound his arm from my waist and remained two steps ahead of me; I followed listening to the sound of darts cutting through the cold air and hitting either the walk or the dirt that framed it. I followed him across two streets, through the ally him and Layla had found me in, past the school, across the half-metal-half-wood bridge, and stopped in the cover of the trees on the other side; the wood side. I leaned my back against the trunk of a huge tree; watching my breath become white clouds and evaporate. Kuzon stood a couple of feet in front of me, one hand on a nearby tree, the other clutching his side; the side that had bled the other night; his breathing was steady but through clenched teeth. He stood like that for a few minutes before taking out a black cell phone; he punched three buttons and held it to his ear. “Pick up.” He said under his breath, “pick up, pick up; pick up.” “Hello?” It was Nicola’s voice. “Where are you?” Kuzon asked quietly, like he was afraid someone was listening in on the conversation; someone that wasn’t me. “The mall, why?” Nicola sounded nervous, like she sensed something in Kuzon’s voice. “What store?” “Layla wants to talk to you.” Nicola said quickly. Kuzon sighed. “Layla-“ “What happened?” Layla sounded frantic. “Don’t wor-“ “I’m already worried!” It sounded like Layla was screaming into the phone. “What the freak happened?” “I’ll explain when we get there. What store are you in?” “Put Cassie on.” Layla demanded. I hadn’t realized my head was down until I brought it up to look at Kuzon. “Lay-“ “Put Cassie on!” “Here she is.” Kuzon said quickly and extended the phone to me. “Layla?” I asked. I heard her breathe a sigh of relief. “You’re alive! How are you feeling?” Concern was thick in her voice. “Umm, okay, I guess.” “Did any of the darts hit you or Kuzon?” “None that I know of.” Another sigh of relief. “Nicola will meet you guys at the south east entrance. Kuzon will most likely try to get here as fast as he can, so I need your help.” “My help?” “Your hearing abilities. If you hear anyone following you, try to get a visual. Like the color of their hair, the hair style, eye color, height, the material of their clothes, if they are male or female, stuff like that. If you can’t get that, try to get something about their walk pattern. Like a limp or something.” “Okay, I’ll try. But no promises.” “I can respect that. See you both soon.” She ended the connection, I handed the phone to Kuzon. “Nicola’s meeting us at the south east entrance.” I told him. He nodded and began walking toward the bridge. I hesitated and followed; Kuzon took hold of my wrist when I caught up to him. When we were ten steps away from the bridge, footsteps followed. I didn’t want to risk turning around to look for fear that the person would actually kill me, or Kuzon, or both of us. The follower placed more pressure on the right foot, and there was the unmistakable sound of leather rubbing leather.
A/N: There is the rest of chapter one. Chapter two will be in Layla's point of view and be shorter. Tell me what you think of chapter one. Peace!!
